Marina gave me an opportunity to “quilt as desired” with her beautiful peony and crane quilt. The flowers were appliqued using blanket stitch that changed colours to match the flower colours, and large needle turned leaves were also added to give a very unique look. These leaves were accented with curls in contrasting greens. The cranes in the centre panel were quilted using silver metallic threads, and these gave a light sparkling effect to the birds, one could imagine them flying away. To give surface dimension the panels background was micro stippled with a pebble or bubble effect behind the birds and flowers, and McTavishing on the lower part. The plain border was 1 inch crosshatched. The overall effect was understated yet captivating when one looked closer. Marina entered this quilt in 2010 Childers Show and won First place in her class, and overall Champion quilt. Congratulations Marina, you deserve the accolades and recognition for your beautiful quilt.
